Drive from Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

In early September 2013 the drive from Central Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater was a dry, dusty affair with few animal sightings. After a morning safari we left the central region at about 11AM and headed south to the Naabi Hill gate.

Here our guide, Tesha, processed the paper work and we climbed the hill to take in the views. Dry, flat grasslands as far as the haze would allow you to see, a preview of the drive to come.

As we approached the volcanic mountains near Ngorongoro Crater we passed the occasional Maasai village, a nomadic people who herd cattle and sheep on these desolate plains.  Dressed in colorful robes, they also frequent the roadside, eager to trade a photo op for a small fee. By early afternoon we arrived at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge with views of the expansive crater. Total drive time about 3 hours.
