Canadian Maritimes + Newfoundland

This fast 16-day road trip through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island in July/August of 2023 focuses on the national parks and outdoor scenery. Highlights include Peggy’s Cove, kayaking in 100 Wild Islands, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Gros Morne National Park, scenic Trinity, wildlife viewing cruise in Witless Bay, PEI oyster tasting and Fundy National Park.

Saint John, New Brunswick – 1 Night
Halifax, Nova Scotia – 1 night

Saint John, NB to Halifax, NS
Our first day on the road was a long one. Starting in Saint John we took the ferry to Digby, NS and crossed the island to Halifax. The colorful towns along Nova Scotia’s east coast and especially Peggy’s Cove deserved a second day.

Coastal Adventures, Nova Scotia – 1 Night

Kayaking with Coastal Adventures
One of the prettiest days of the trip, we paddled around the rock formations and islets of 100 Wild Islands. Spent the night at Coastal Adventures’ Paddler’s Retreat Bed and Breakfast.

Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia – 2 Nights

Cape Breton Island
The island is most known for dramatic coastal scenery, historic sites, traditional Gaelic music and artisan crafts. We spent 1 night each at two different campgrounds, Mkwesaqtuk/Cap-Rouge Campground on the west coast and Ingonish Beach Campground on the east coast.

Port aux Basque, Newfoundland – 1 Night
Gros Morne National Park – 2 Nights

Gros Morne National Park
Gros Morne National Park running along Newfoundland’s west coast is a dramatic coastal area of rounded mountain tops and bluffs overlooking the sea and waterways. Arriving in the evening on Newfoundland we spend the night in Port aux Basque before driving the 6 hours to the national park.

Trinity, Newfoundland – 1 Night

Trinity, Newfoundland
Picturesque Trinity can be walked in about 30 minutes but I would give the area a second day to explore the scenic area. If you want to see puffins up close I was told that there is a colony close to shore at Elliston near Bonavista.

St John’s, Newfoundland – 1 Night
Overnight Ferry Crossing – 1 Night

Puffin Viewing at Witless Bay Ecological Reserve
Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, about 30 minutes south of St John’s, is the starting point for wildlife viewing boat trips to see whales, most commonly humpbacks and minke, and the birds of Gull Island including a half a million puffins.

Johnson Shore Inn, PEI – 2 Nights

Quick Visit to PEI
PEI, a relatively flat island, is decidedly more cultivated than anything else in the region. Large fields of potatoes and wheat hemmed in by trees, probably wind breaks, lined every road I traveled on my short visit. It might not be my first choice but I can see why people absolutely love it and return year after year.

Fundy National Park, New Brunswick – 2 Nights

Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick
Fundy National Park is most known for its incredible tide levels with 30-45ft changes between high and low tide. The park also has camping and pretty forest walks with sea views.
