Review of EB Hotel, Quito, Ecuador

The EB Hotel by Eurobuilding is a relatively new, comfortable business style hotel that works well but is void of local character. The staff is friendly and efficient, arranging free pickup and drop offs to the airport, just 8 minutes away, and on-site Covid testing, $45USD for an antigen test. Result were available in under 2 hours.

They upgraded us to a suite with a sitting room, bedroom, a half bath off the entrance plus a bathroom with a shower in the bedroom. The rooms are spacious and decorated in sophisticated muted tones without much flare or fuss. The glass shower has just a glass wall between the bedroom and the bathroom with a shade for privacy. Off the bathroom is a dressing area with plenty of storage. Amenities included the usual items of a hotel of this quality including a hairdryer, safe, blackout shades, and a coffee and tea service and a good Wi-Fi connection. The hotel did not seem very full during our stay and was very quiet.

Dinner

The dinner menu offers a selection of proteins, pastas and pizza as well as appetizers, salads, sandwiches and desserts. While they have a QR code where you can access the menu online, the English online one is only the room service menu and is missing many of the dinner offerings. If you don’t read Spanish ask for a paper English menu.

We tried two of the proteins, the paiche, a local river fish, with an Asian sauce and the beef medallions cooked medium rare. We both ordered the potatoes gratin and the mixed vegetables as our sides. They also have French fries, rice and pasta. This was our first taste of paiche and I was not impressed. While I think it was well cooked, it’s a soft mushy fish. The beef on the other hand had great beef flavor, slightly livery, and was perfectly cooked. The potatoes gratin were amazing, not as cheesy and creamy as we often see in the US, and with great potato flavor. The vegies were a disappointment, limp without much going on.

We had ordered a ceviche to start but somehow it got lost in the shuffle and our mains were served before we could inquire about it so we canceled the order.

There were only a few tables occupied during our visit and no one in the bar.
