Hill of Crosses, Lithuania

The Hill of Crosses is one of Lonely Planet’s highlights of the Baltics. The small hill, barely a hill, is covered in more crosses of various types and sizes than you can imagine. Some are beautifully carved while others are cheap plastic. Surrounded by farm land the site is aesthetically pleasing, interesting and worth the effort.

On the drive from Vilnius to Klaipeda and with showers passing through we took a chance on the weather and made a detour to the pilgrimage site outside of Siauliai. We got there just before the rain and in between tour busses and had a few minutes of solitude and sunshine marveling at the many crosses before the sky opened up. A poetic moment.

Driving

The Hill of Crosses is 2.5 hours from Vilnius and adds 1.5 hours driving time to the route from Vilnius to Klaipeda, which is 3 hours without the detour. The site is directly on the 4 hour route from Klaipeda to Riga.
