Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Kathmandu, Nepal

Swayambhunath is also known as the Monkey Temple for the myriad monkeys that live on the steep staircase leading to the temple.

They also give you a reason to take a break on the climb up.

The hilltop site has views over the city. A crowd gathers at the rail to get their picture taken with the view, a hazy cityscape that I doubt is ever very clear.

The rest of the complex is a fascinating compilation of shrines, memorials and prayer wheels.

From Thamel it’s a half hour walk through dirty Kathmandu, trash thrown everywhere, and across a polluted river. A far cry from the more colorful and charming streets south of Thamel. You may want to take a taxi for this one.
