Rain was predicted for the next day or so with the chances of thunder showers only increasing, so we decided to hit the Sanctuary of Olympia, home of the original Olympic Games, on the way into town.
As with Delphi the site was much more interesting when following the Rick Steves self-guided tour found in his guidebook. Although there are plaques with descriptions about the various structures, his tour helps organize your visit and brings the vast complex to life. There isn’t much left of many of the buildings, but enough to imagine what this place must have been like in antiquity at the height of the games.
