A warm spring evening in Venice and we were enjoying a lovely dinner at on a small quiet street. Then the waitress suggests that we might want to move our table over a bit. We look down, and sure enough water is bubbling up from a grate at the base of the restaurant wall. We were nearly finished with dinner and didn’t think too much of it and decided to take a stroll to the Piazza San Marco.

The closer we got to the square the higher the water rose. A few enterprising young men were selling plastic bags to place over our shoes. We opted instead to just take off our shoes and roll up our pant legs before walking the last block into the square that was now a good foot and half under water. None-the-less there were plenty of others splashing about in square.

And at the the Rialto Bridge the high water wasn’t stopping these folks.
