Early April it is no surprise that we encountered turbulent skies for our day trip out to Volubilis, the most important Roman ruin in Morocco dating from the 2-3 century AD. The 30 kilometer drive from Meknes is easy and reasonably well signed.
While the site itself is not that spectacular, having been leveled in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the setting in early spring is phenomenal. As green as green gets with wild flowers blooming around the ancient stones and views across the cultivated valleys. Who knew olive trees and agave grew in such lush conditions? A series of squalls passing through just added to the drama. Aside from the scenery the site also has some impressive original mosaics.
