Photos from Erg Chebbi Dunes – Merzouga, Morocco

For me walking the dunes was more fun than the camel excursion – winding a path through the dunes, climbing up the peaks of sometimes packed sand and other times plunging into more recently accumulated soft sand. It feels a little dangerous at the top of some of the peaks, but really I think it would be difficult to fall off and actually hurt yourself. Getting lost is not a problem as you can see at least one edge of the dune area from just about any peak. The best time to explore the dunes is early in the morning or late in the day when the sun is not so harsh. Still, take plenty of water.
