All the guide books tell you that Varanasi is at its colorful best on a sunrise boat ride. I have to agree that the parade of people and colors in the early morning glow of the rising sun makes the grittiness fade. The people watching is unparalleled, voyeuristic really, as locals get ready for the new day, bathing, praying, meditating, exercising etc., all on the banks of the Ganges.
The day after the Dussehra Festival the remains of the effigies dumped into the river the evening before begin to wash up along the banks.
