Autun, a former Roman stronghold with a number of Gallo-Roman sites, lies about 60 miles southwest of Dijon. More importantly it’s listed in David Downie’s Food Wine Burgundy as having one of the best food markets in the region – Wednesday and Friday mornings (8AM to 1PM) in the town center at Place du Champ de Mars. On a Friday morning in late June the dry goods market filled the square while the food market stalls were principally located in the adjoining covered market hall. If you are primarily interested in food products this is a much nicer arrangement. You don’t have to wade through shoes and baskets to get to the olives.

While an average market by Provence standards, compared to the Sunday market in Chenôve it’s a cook’s paradise. Several purveyors of specialty meats – poultry, rabbit, beef, etc., but, sadly, no Bresse chicken. Two fish mongers, although the fish was mostly from the Atlantic or Mediterranean with few local lake or river fish. We did, however, pick up a couple of fresh trout. An ample selection of good quality produce and an interesting selection of other specialty vendors -cheese (of course), olives, sausage, and local beer. Definitely a fun place to look around and an excellent place to stock the fridge.
